1Pet 5:1-14

Shepherds and sheep

There’s a ‘suffering followed by glory’ motif throughout this letter that Jesus experienced, and we do too. We  therefore need shepherds over the flock to help us – elders.

The early church was first led by apostles, then administrators arose (deacons in Acts 6:1-6) who lightened the load. Then, as it began to spread and more churches were started, the apostles appointed elders to lead churches, helped by deacons. Here we see that the job of eldership teams is to exercise oversight and be a good example – not lazy or greedy.

Jesus is our chief shepherd; with that team of Jesus and elders, we are called to be good followers – humble, sober minded and watchful.

Resist the devil. He is like a prowling lion – they circle a flock looking for the weak and stragglers to pick off. Be rooted in to church life to resist him.

Peace to all who are in Christ Jesus
