God’s miracle working power

What a chapter! If we ever needed to be reminded of God's miracle working power it is now! The God who did all these miracles is the same God who we worship now and He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8) so we can be confident that if he did these miracles then – He will certainly do them now!

In each of the miracles we see acts of obedience. The widow had to borrow the jars from her friends and neighbours and then she saw the miracle that she needed to save her from the difficult financial situation she was in.

When the Shunammite woman's son died, Elisha is obedient to God – you'd have to be pretty sure you'd heard from God to lie on a dead body twice to bring it back to life!

The stew made for the group of prophets had poisonous stuff added to it – in a time of famine where food was scarce this was a disaster but obediently they listen to Elisha, add flour and it makes it safe to eat.

In the final miracle in this chapter, we see that there is not enough food to feed a group of 100 people, but in faithfully listening to God and handing the food out any way, there is more than enough and they have food left over!

We can see from this chapter that, before seeing these miracles happen, it requires a step of faith. Offering to pray for someone, listening to God and following His lead all require us to step out of our comfort zone – but it is so worth it. Because in all of these miracles, after the obedience, then came the breakthrough miracle.

Some of these miracles (particularly the last one) may sound familiar because some of the miracles we see Elisha doing also parallel Jesus' ministry in a smaller way:

Elisha Jesus
Feeding of 100 (2 Kings 4:43-44) Feeding 5000 (Matthew 14)
Shunamite boy raised (2 Kings 4:35 ) Lazarus (Luke 11), a young girl (Mark 5) and boy raised (Luke 7).
Water turned from unuseable to drinkable (2 Kings 2) Water turned to wine (John 2)
Healed a leper (2 Kings 5) Healed 10 lepers (Luke 17)

John 14:12 – “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.”

Jesus said that we would do greater things than Him. So we can expect to see miracles happen! How exciting! What opportunity! Let's keep stepping out in faith expecting God to move.

Testimonies are a great way to encourage each other. Let's keep sharing testimonies of what God is doing and read the Bible to remind ourselves of all God has already done!

This will stir and build up our faith, helping us to step out and be obedient to God and as we do we will see God at work in amazing ways!
