Ps 19

There is so much we can take from this Psalm! It shows us how God reveals things to us in so many different ways. We can often think God is silent, but God is always speaking, the problem is with us – are we listening? God speaks to each of us in a different way and as we learn to hear His voice. That is why God speaks in so many different ways; because He made us all unique and knows how to best speak to each of us. We see a few ways within this Psalm.

Creation reveals God to us

The first part of this Psalm shows us how God uses His creation to reveal Himself to us. It talks about how everything in creation declares God’s glory even though they have no words. When we think about the awesomeness of how God has made the sun and all the different plants and animals it’s mind blowing. We see God’s loving, creative, caring nature.

Romans 1:20 is a verse that has been on my heart quite a bit since the end of last year: ‘For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.’

I love how God shows himself to everyone. When we really think about creation it points to God. So often I have been out walking or running and I’ve just been in awe of God because of what He has made. It amazes me because of the diversity I can see in my small little spot on the Earth, and yet there is so much more!

Bible reveals God to us

V7-11 are talking about the scriptures – the Bible. David, who wrote this Psalm, really grasped the importance of scripture that it really is God’s word spoken to us. He knew that there was power and life in knowing and applying this truth to our lives.

But the words the Psalmist is using to describe God’s Word are also describing God too. I looked this Psalm up in several versions and these are all the words used to describe God’s Word (and therefore God as well) – Perfect, flawless, refreshing, reviving, restoring soul, trustworthy, reliable, leads us to truth sure, right, giving joy to heart, rejoicing, keep us close to His heart, radiant, clear pure, giving light to the eyes, insight for living, enlightening, makes spirit shine, clean, enduring forever, following brings cheer, firm, true, righteous, nothing God says ever needs changing, fair, more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. Wow!

All of these words show us and remind us how awesome God is, and they lead us to live in reverence of Him. V11 – reminds us that God uses His Word to warn us and help us to live life His way.

Knowing God reveals us to ourselves

When we really see and know God through His creation and Word it can often lead us to recognise our own inadequacies. We see how after marvelling at creation and scripture David then humbles himself before God and asks for help to reveal hidden faults and help him not to fall into sin. What I love is that he isn’t beating himself up and saying how worthless and awful he is (I know as people we so often do – myself included!) he is coming before God openly and honestly and sharing his heart. God loves that we come to Him openly and honestly – He shows us that He is exactly what we need and reveals an aspect of his character/nature to us.

So why not ask God to open your eyes and ears to see Him throughout your day and be encouraged as you see Him and how He is working in creation, the Bible and so many other ways!
