Such an encouraging first iCaf

The Gateway iCaf started this morning with guests from two nations – Latvia and the Ukraine. The first person to arrive was a refugee with no English whatsoever so it was a baptism of fire! Then others came with different levels of English from beginner to elementary and some with their UK sponsors.

We enjoyed wonderful coffee and cake – showing the true meaning of hospitality. The Biblical word for “show hospitality” literally means love the foreigner/stranger. We certainly got to do that this morning!

We spent a little time showing our absolute beginner how to say hello, what is your name? and My name is… moving onto Where are you from? And then onto today’s topic of summer. I used a suitcase full of summer objects to help practice and learn new vocabulary and get our guests using summer vocab.

Then we moved to a game using spot the difference cards with a summer theme.

We finished the session by using the vocabulary to tell the story of Jesus at the well – although I need to make that much simpler!
