Our wider family
The Gateway Church is part of a wider family churches called “Relational Mission“, which is a part of Newfrontiers.
Newfrontiers started during the charismatic renewal in the 1960s and 70s as new churches began to look to Terry Virgo for support and help. Terry’s passon was to see churches restored to New Testament life. Over the decades Newfrontiers grew considerably through the Bible weeks and conferences; and as churches got adopted because they loved the relationships and the values; and by lots of church planting. In 2011 Terry handed the movement over to “apostolic sons” who each formed their own spheres of which is Relational Mission is one.
Relational Mission is the apostolic sphere we are part of.
We named our family ‘Relational Mission’ as we felt it combined the two key elements we felt shine through in New Testament apostolic ministry, relationship and mission.
Relationship without mission becomes inward, static and soon deteriorates into decline.
Mission without relationship becomes driven, functional and can make the gospel itself unappealing. God wants a family on mission with him, hence our name.
Mike Betts, Maurice Nightingale and Stef Liston form the apostolic team who lead Relational Mission. Apostolic ministry is about three things.
- 1) Caring for the existing churches – leaders are supported and gather regularly for prayer and fellowship. We can invite in ministry to help us, like Marshall who brings prophetic encouragement and challenge.
- 2 )Plumbline of doctrine of values – we share alignment in what we value and the doctrines we hold onto. In the New Testament the apostle Paul seemed to spend most of his time straightening false doctrine out
- 3) Regions beyond – we belive that planting new churches as key way of reaching people with the Gospel.
