John 10:10tells us that the enemy has set our to steal, kill and destroy. We are taught in James 4:7 to draw near to God, in order to resist the devil.

Esther is a great example of this. Duringthe time of the exile in the Old Testament, Esther was a young Jewish woman stuck in Persia under the reign of King Xerxes, who had become queen. At the same time one of Xerxes commanders, Haaman, hated Jews and hatched a plot to have them killed. Esther’s uncle Mordecai discovers the plit and lets Esther know, reminding her she is queen for a reason.

Esther 4:13-14

13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”

She realizes this and asks Mordecai and others to join her in a fast.

Esther 4:16

16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”

This shows us that fasting is strategic and especially useful before going into spiritual warfare. It adds a boldness to our spirit! Especially if we pray Scriptural promises – the sword of the Spirit!

2 Corinthians 10:5 New International Version (NIV)

5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
