Jesus Christ our Treasure
Today we come to see Christ as our priceless treasure – He is the one who saves us from destruction and brings us into eternal life!
Here in Matthew, you can sense the awe and reverence on the faces of His listeners, as Jesus paints a vivid picture of the separation of the righteous and the wicked in His righteous judgement “in the age to come” (13:36-43 and 47-40). This parallels what Jesus says in John 3:36 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
Jesus goes on to share stories about a man who finds hidden treasure and another who finds a pearl of great value. Just minutes before finding hidden treasure it would have likely been beyond each man’s wildest dreams to sell “all that he has” to acquire a find. But then minutes after coming upon his find each man was off to do it with joy. The reason being the value of the treasure found. The treasure transformed their outlook on life, it restructured their values and priorities – it changed them.
The treasure in these stories is Jesus’ gift of eternal life. There was indeed a cost to gaining this treasure. But the apparent high cost, that being everything each man had, was eclipsed by the wealth of the treasure itself. And it didn’t take long for either of them to jump into selling everything they had to become wealthier than they could ever imagine through this treasure.
Christ’s life given to us is our priceless treasure. Let this truth sink in today and produce joyful thanksgiving and adoration of Him. This treasure of priceless value is worth telling about. Ask Jesus to help you share with others about this treasure that they may see Him too and may receive Him.
